There’s a few reasons why.

• Reduced root growth: When root growth is stunted due to compacted soil, the roots can’t absorb the nutrients from the fertilizer like they should. This leaves a lot of the fertilizer unused and eventually it dilutes out of the soil.

• Poor water infiltration: Soil compaction leads water to either runoff the surface or just sit on top of the soil (waterlogging) instead of soaking deep into the ground like it should. Since fertilizer nutrients move with the water, this can impact its effectiveness.

• Lack of oxygen: Oxygen also struggles to move freely in compacted soil and that lack of oxygen is going to impact your lawn’s roots and its ability to take up nutrients. In poorly oxygenated soil, microbial activity slows. This is also problematic as it is this microbial activity that helps your lawn to break down organic matter and convert it into nutrients.

The bottom line? Even if you’re fertilizing your lawn, it might not be getting what it needs if you’re not using lawn aeration services.

How a Core Aeration Service Works

A core aeration service involves the use of a specialized piece of machinery called a core aerator.

During this process, small holes are punched into your lawn, creating what we call aeration plugs. These are tiny soil cores that are pulled up and left on the surface to naturally break down.

By loosening the soil, aeration helps roots grow deeper, improves water absorption, and gives your grass the nutrients it needs to thrive. It’s one of the easiest ways to give your lawn a serious health boost, especially in the fall. A core aeration service also sets the stage for successful overseeding, which means a thicker and greener yard as bare spots fill in.

How is Liquid Aeration Different?

At Shades of Green, we also offer a liquid aeration service which is quite different from core aeration.

We call our liquid aeration service Soil Builder, because that’s exactly what it does. It builds up your soil health in a really important way.

Your lawn needs beneficial bacteria and fungi to stay healthy and strong. That is what is introduced when having a Soil Builder service performed.

While some might think that this is meant to be a replacement for a core aeration service, that’s not the case at all. They really do work hand-in-hand and if you care about getting the best results, you’ll want to consider doing both.

Core aeration helps open up the soil and relieve compaction, while liquid aeration builds up the microbial life your lawn needs to thrive. One creates space, the other fills it with the good stuff to improve the overall health of your soil.

What is Overseeding?

Overseeding the lawn is something that is best done at the time of lawn aeration. A lawn overseeding service is the process of distributing new seed onto the lawn. This helps to fill in bare spots or thin areas.

Overseeding also introduces new and improved grass seed into your yard.

Grass seed planted 10 years ago isn’t the same as what’s available today. The latest seed blends are packed with all the modern upgrades: darker green grass, better disease resistance, and stronger roots. Regular overseeding introduces these new genetics into your lawn, making it healthier and more vibrant.

Which Aeration and Overseeding Option is Right For You?

At Shades of Green Lawn Care, we offer the Soil Builder program as well as three different levels of core aeration services to choose from. That’s because we know that every lawn is different.

Internally, we code these three packages as AO (Aeration Overseed) 1, 2, or 3. Which option might be right for you?

• The AO-1 Aeration Package is our base-tier lawn maintenance service. It’s perfect if you already have a nice lawn and are just looking to top it off. It includes one pass of core aeration to relieve soil compaction and promote root growth, followed by standard overseeding rate to fill in bare spots and incorporate new grass growth.

• The AO-2 Aeration Package includes two passes and double the standard rate of seeding. This is our most recommended tier and is ideal if your lawn is thin, stressed, or plagued by bare spots.

• The AO-3 Aeration Package features three aeration passes and triple the seeding rate. This is about as close as you can get to a total lawn renovation and is best for lawns that require a major overhaul - or for new construction homes.

Most lawn care companies are not going to give you options like this but we feel that your lawn care should be customized for your needs. Most homeowners end up choosing the AO-2 package as it provides premium results but isn’t quite as much of an overhaul as AO-3.

Because of how common it is for lawns to become compacted, we actually like to aerate twice a year, in the spring and the fall. If you’re someone who is looking for the best-possible results and want to do everything you can for your lawn, then we’d recommend bi-annual lawn aeration services.

Overseeding is best done in the fall. This is a time when the weather is optimal for new germination. The air is starting to cool down but the ground is still warm.

My lawn is in need of a lot of work. Which program should I select?

If your lawn is in rough shape, you’ll probably want to choose the AO-2 or AO-3 service. A lot of the time, lawns aren’t in as bad a shape as homeowners think they are. But if you truly need an overhaul, you’ll want to lean toward AO-3, which is as close as you can get to a total lawn renovation.

How long does it take to see results after overseeding?

You’ll see some new germination start to sprout as soon as a week but it’ll be some time until it actually fills in and looks like a lawn. It’s imperative to follow watering instructions after a lawn aeration service.
